Nephrology is the adult and pediatric study of the kidneys and its diseases. The nephrologist deals with the diagnosis and management of kidney disease. The kidneys are vital for maintaining normal fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.
Healthy kidneys cleans blood and removes extra fluid in the form of urine. They also make substances that keeps human body healthy. Dialysis is a process of purifying the blood of a person whose kidneys are not working normally. Dialysis replaces some of these functions when kidneys no longer work. In heamodialysis, a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney or a dialyzer used to clean the blood. This type of dialysis achieves the extra corporeal removal of waste products such as creatinine, urea and free water from the blood when the kidneys are in a state of renal failure.
In some cases, sudden or acute kidney failure may only be needed for a short time until the kidneys get better. This is known as Acute renal failure.
Whereas chronic kidney disease progresses to kidney failure over time and in such cases kidneys never get better, such type of patients needs to under go dialysis process for their rest of life time.
